Definition:
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by
repeated bouts of binge eating and a preoccupation with the control of
body weight, leading the patient to adopt extreme forms of purging to mitigate the
'fattening" effects of ingested food. Purging usually consists of
self-induced vomiting and/or laxative abuse. Repeated purging is likely to
give rise to disturbances of body electrolytes, physical complications
(epileptic seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, severe tooth decay, muscular
weakness), and further severe loss of weight.
