Antipsychotic medications have been available since the mid-1950s. They have greatly improved the outlook for patients with schizophrenia, severe bipolar disorders, and similar diagnoses. These medications reduce the psychotic symptoms and allow the person to function more effectively and appropriately.
Some new research suggests that people on these medications should be aware of potential long-term side effeects.
