After the Viet Nam War the concept of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was introduced into the language.  Combat fatigue and shell shock are terms that were used in previous wars, and we have been familiar with the effects of trauma for a long time.  Trauma from child abuse and natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and fires affects us in similar ways.
