Your Turn
My thoughts about
Wonderland
By Elliot Shamis, M.S.
The protests against Wonderland are as predictable as they are misplaced. The program is not offered to us as a documentary, and we should not expect such. Unfortunately, every special interest group seems to feel that every form of entertainment and communication should serve its particular agenda. But why?| Your Turn: User-submitted mental health features. Submit yours here. |
That's their job. If a filmmaker or playwright wishes to serve a particular cause, he/she has that right, but certainly not the obligation. If I write a screenplay about a murderer who happens to be African-American, I am not suggesting that all African-Americans are murderers, nor am I making a racist statement. If a show focuses on some violent, mentally disturbed people, this does not imply that all the mentally disturbed are violent. The viewing public is generally intelligent enough to separate fact from fiction, reality from drama, propaganda from story telling. Perhaps if some of the organizations in questions were a little less defensive, they would be more successful.
As for myself, I loved the show. Smartly written, beautifully acted, insightful, funny and serious. I have known and worked with people like this, and know that "they" are not all like this. Check it out and decide for yourself. Just remember its a creative drama, not a public service announcementBack to the list of User Contributions
