Mental Health Net Part Two

Leonard Holmes, Ph.D.                      http://mentalhealth.about.com

<- Back to Part One

Mental Health Net bills itself as "the largest, most comprehensive guide to mental health online, featuring over 6,000 individual resources." This site was reviewed two weeks ago, and detailed information was provided on The Reading Room and Managed Care and Administration (formerly called Mental Health Administration). This feature will review the two remaining sections, and provide some information on the recent makeover of the site.

Deeper into the content is the feature that I like the best. Pages which review net resources allow you to vote on whether or not you like every site! The votes get tallied and the site gets a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down based on the user votes. This system does not replace the stars which Grohol awards to sites.

Disorders and Treatments

The section on Disorders and Treatments includes reviews of hundreds of online resources. The section is organized alphabetically, and includes resources on physical disorders such as allergies and prostatitis. At the top of the section are five additional resources.

The Clinician's Yellow Pages allows you to search for a therapist in your area. The Self-Help Sourcebook is a search engine for finding real world support groups and self-help resources.

Psychological Self-Help is a 1,000 page hypertext online book by Clayton Tucker-Ladd, Ph.D. This is a wonderful resource. It would be one of the top mental resources on the internet if it existed as a free-standing site. It's a bit harder to find within Mental Health Net, but it is worth searching for.

Facts for Families is a series of brochures copied from from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The brochures are also available in English, French and Spanish at the AACAP site, but only in English at Mental Health Net. Why are these reprinted here when providing a link would be more efficient?

Mental Disorders Symptoms and Treatment is a nice quick reference to the symptoms and treatment for various mental disorders. Much of the information on symptoms is condensed from the "official" symptoms in the DSM-IV.

Professional Resources

The section on Professional Resources is difficult to describe. There are links to Assessment Resources, Medications, and Associations & Organizations. There is a searchable database Calendar and a JobLink section. , PsychJournalSearch is an authorized mirror of Armin Guenther's Links to Psychological Journals. Mirroring a site in Germany makes things faster for North American net users. All this and more is available right from the site's homepage. Going to the Professional Resources section offers even more possibilities.

Mental Health Net is easier to use than ever. The material is deep and fairly easy to find. It should remain one of the best mental health sites for a long time to come.
