Should students avoid majoring in psychology? I'm not ready to make that recommendation. I do recommend that students keep their options open. Majoring in psychology is still a good way to learn about the mind and about human behavior. As a psychology major it may be smart to take electives that will allow you to enter other graduate programs if you decide to. Take a look at the requirements for medical school, law school, or business school - depending on what your interests are. Taking a few extra classes may allow you many more options when it's time to apply for graduate school. You may also want to consider fields like counseling and social work - careers which often open the same doors with less education.
The employment world is changing for psychologists. Psychologists are scrambling to keep up. Having as awareness of these issues will help you make a good decision about your future. There are three things that are important when choosing a career:
- Your career should be doing something that you enjoy doing.
- Your career should be doing something that you are good at.
- Your career should be doing something that someone will pay you for.
A psychology degree will still be a useful degree in the future. Keep an eye on the job market for psychologists, but use both your head and your heart to make career decisions.
