The mission of About's health sites is to bring you reliable health
information. We wade through the broad range of health information that's
out there and bring you the only the information that we think is reliable.
The U.S. government liked that idea so much that it decided to do the same
thing. Their "healthfinder" site was founded in order to screen health
information and feature the information that they believe to be reliable.
The Department of Health and Human Services went one step further and
included information on organizations that don't even have their own Website.
While this is now a small minority, it still provides a real service. What
if your child needs eye surgery? The
National
Children's Eye Care Foundation does not appear to have its own Website, but
healthfinder still lists a mailing address and a phone number. Similar
organizations include the
Psoriasis
Research Association, and the
National
Center for the Study of Wilson's Disease. Until they develop a site,
their healthfinder listing allows the public to find them.
About.com's Mental Health Resources will continue to focus on issues related
to mental health. Healthfinder has a
broader focus, and it has been included here because of the unique service that
it provides.
