  4. Give two types of mental illness mentioned in the video.
  5. What is the function of the folds in the cortex?
  6. According to the video, what is the key to understanding those with mental illness?
  7. Explain what is meant by the comment "nerve cells are highly interconnected."
Student Guide – Check for Understanding

Please answer the following questions:

  1. Draw and label the parts of a neuron.
  2. Draw three interconnecting neurons and show how conduction passes through these neurons by using arrows to designate direction.
  3. Why is it necessary to understand normal brain function in order to treat or prevent mental illness?
  4. Now that you know the structure of a neuron, how it functions, and its interconnections, propose a possible explanation of how mental illness can occur as a result of a malfunction.  Please state where the malfunction occurs and its repercussions.
  5. Explain how a malfunction can affect learning and memory.
