Resources in Times of Uncertainty

The recent sniper attacks in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia not only are terrible tragedies for the victims and their loved ones, but the random nature of the shootings can generate anxiety among all of us as we go about our daily tasks, including shopping for groceries and taking our children to school. Residents of the Washington, D.C. metro areas and their families across the country are dealing with the stress of uncertainty and frustration at these acts of random violence.

The emotional impact of traumatic events can have devastating effects on the mental well-being of individuals of all ages. For many of us, it is easy to focus all of our energies on helping other people or on maintaining our daily schedules and routines. Although these efforts deserve our attention, it is important to remember to take care of yourself and to monitor your own emotions during difficult times. Tending to your own mental health and emotional well-being will make you a better, more reliable resource for friends and family members during their times of need.

These resources were collected by The Center for Mental Health Services at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
