The Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization based in Washington D.C. which advocates for people with mental illness and mental retardation. Their current work is focused on reform of public systems to serve adults, children and older people with mental disabilities in their communities; access to housing, health care and support services of consumers' choice; services and support to help children with disabilities grow up in families; and, protections against discrimination?in housing, employment and public services. Their web site includes news and analysis of federal laws, regulations, legislative proposals and court decisions in each area. Bazelon Center attorneys provide technical support for and co-counsel selected lawsuits and publish handbooks, manuals, issue papers and reports explaining key legal and policy issues in everyday terms.

The Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation is a research, training, and service organization dedicated to improving the lives of people who have psychiatric disabilities. The mission of the Center is to increase knowledge in the field of psychiatric rehabilitation and to apply this body of knowledge to train treatment personnel, to develop effective rehabilitation programs, and to assist in organizing both personnel and programs into efficient and coordinated service delivery systems. CONTACT's programs include Helpline (crisis intervention, listening, information and referrals), Teen Line (teens helping teens), KidsLine (a helpline especially for latch-key children), DEAF CONTACT (a message relay for hearing impaired), Reassurance CONTACT (a program for the elderly and homebound), CONTACT Rape Crisis (emergency and after-care service for victims) and Information & Referral (linking callers to community services).

The mission of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill is to eradicate mental illness and improve the quality of life of those affected by these diseases. NAMI members are dedicated to increasing research into severe mental illness such as schizophrenia and manic-depression. The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) organizes to reflect and advocate for the collective interests of State Mental Health Authorities and their directors at the national level. The mission of the National Empowerment Center (NEC) is to carry a message of recovery, empowerment, hope and healing to people who have been diagnosed with mental illness. The NEC has a toll-free information and referral line and a Spanish-speaking information specialist is also available. They have information available on many topics including advance directives, shock treatment, schizophrenia, self-help groups, legal services, meditation and self-help techniques.

The mission of NIMH is to diminish the burden of mental illness through research. This public health mandate demands that they harness powerful scientific tools to achieve better understanding, treatment and, eventually prevention of mental illness. The National Mental Health Association (NMHA) is the nation's first and oldest consumer-led organization. The Clearinghouse is a consumer-run national technical assistance center established in 1986. They are committed to helping mental health consumers improve their lives through self-help and advocacy. Specifically, they help consumers plan, provide, and evaluate mental health and community support services. The Clearinghouse helps people within the movement organize coalitions, establish self-help groups, advocate for mental health reform, and fight the stigma that society places on mental illness. They also strive to help the movement grow by encouraging consumer involvement in planning and evaluating mental health services, as well as by encouraging traditional providers and other societal groups to become more consumer-friendly.
