The American Association of Suicidology is dedicated to the understanding and prevention of suicide. AAS promotes research, public awareness programs, education and training for professionals and volunteers. In addition, it serves as a national clearinghouse for information on suicide. Their web site contains a list of recommended books on many aspects of suicide prevention, available to order online or through their mail room. AAS offers both individual and organizational memberships.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to advancing the knowledge of suicide and the ability to prevent it. The Foundation's activities include supporting research projects that help further the understanding and treatment of depression and the prevention of suicide and providing information and education about depression and suicide. The toll-free line is an information and referral center, with educational materials and a database of survivor support groups across the nation. CONTACT USA is a network of crisis intervention and telephone helpline centers across the nation. CONTACT's programs include Helpline (crisis intervention, listening, information and referrals), Teen Line (teens helping teens), KidsLine (a helpline especially for latch-key children), DEAF CONTACT (a message relay for hearing impaired), Reassurance CONTACT (a program for the elderly and homebound), CONTACT Rape Crisis (emergency and after-care service for victims) and Information & Referral (linking callers to community services).

DRADA?s mission is to alleviate the suffering arising from depression and manic depression by assisting self-help groups, providing education and information, and lending support to research programs. NARSAD is an organization which was formed from four major citizens' groups (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, National Mental Health Association, National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association and the Schizophrenia Research Foundation) in 1986. NARSAD raises and distributes funds for scientific research into the causes, cures and treatments, and prevention of severe mental illness, primarily schizophrenia and depression. Their web site includes information on their educational materials, mailing list, grants, and Infoline (a service that provides referrals, answers questions and sends free materials on psychiatric illnesses.)

NDMDA aids in the development and support of self-help groups across the country. They produce a quarterly newsletter, Outreach, and educational materials with up-to-the-minute information about depression and manic depression.
