Decision-making is easier when you look at all the options first and thennarrow things down. Here's one technique that may help.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: varies

Here's How:

  1. Brainstorm. Generate a list of as many different options as you can.
  2. Narrow the options - keep the ones you are really interested in
  3. List the advantages and disadvantages of each remaining option
  4. Pay attention to how you feel about each option - not just what you think.
  5. Narrow your choices to 2 or 3 options.
  6. Divide a piece of paper in 2 columns - advantages and disadvantages.
  7. Make sections for your 2 or 3 choices and fill-in the grid with advantages and disadvantages.
  8. Again notice your feelings as well as your thoughts.
  9. Use this paper to help you decide - the answer may jump out at you.
  10. Talk with a friend about your decision - you may be overlooking something.
  11. Announce your decision to someone after you make it. This commits you to take action.
  12. If you continue to have trouble making a decision, ask yourself if there is some benefit to being indecisive.

Tips:

  1. Do not eliminate any options during the brainstorming stage.
  2. Talking with a few trusted friends can be a big help - especially with big decisions.
  3. Consult loved ones if the decision will have a major effect on their life.
