Weight Gain with Bipolar Treatment?

Patients taking mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder sometimes find themselves gaining weight. Some of the newer mood stabilizers can cause weight gain. A new study found that iamotrigine, marketed as Lamictal in the U.S., did not cause weight gain. An older drug, lithium, also did not differ from placebo in weight gain. It is important for those diagnosed with bipolar disorder to know that there are options available that will allow them to take their medications and not gain weight.
