Teen Smoking may help Prevent SchizophreniaA new study has found evidence that smoking between ages 18 and 21 may actually lower the risk of developing schizophrenia.The study, just published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, was following-up earlier research showing that smoking may
actually treat the symptoms of schizophrenia.
This was a large study on 50,000 Swedish subjects. A summary published in The Age quotes the authors as reporting "There was a ... relationship between the number of cigarettes smoked and a lower risk of schizophrenia....Smoking may be an independent protective factor for developing schizophrenia."
