Myths about Mental Health
Wednesday October 13, 2004
The Statesman, An Online Indian Newpaper, published a good article on mental health myths. Their myths include:
- A mentally ill person is crazy.
- “Once a crazy, always a crazy”.
- Depression results from a personality weakness or character flaw, and the person just needs to snap out of it.
- Schizophrenia means split personality.
- The mentally ill are often dangerous and violent.
I've dealt with many of these myths before, but it is interesting to read them through the eyes of a different culture.
