U.S. Prisoner Treatment Causes Mental Health Problems
Saturday October 11, 2003
The International Committee of the Red Cross has criticized the United States Government for its treatment of suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay. The Red Cross also complained that the U.S. has refused to address their concerns. Spokesman Florian Westphal is quoted as saying
"We have observed what we consider to be a worrying deterioration in the psychological health of a large number of the internees"
Red Cross officials who visited the camp reported that most prisoners are worried about the open-endedness of their detention and their lack of legal representation. Based on past experience with POWs these prisoners are certainly at risk for PTSD or other mental health problems based on their imprisonment under these circumstances.
