Topomax (Topiramate) May Treat Alcohol Dependence
Thursday July 31, 2003
A recent study, partially supported by a pharmaceutical company, found that topiramate (marketed as Topomax in the U.S.) may be effective in the treatment of alcohol dependence. Researchers studied 150 alcohol-dependent patients (who averaged 9 drinks a day). They received either topiramate or placebo and visited a clinc weekly to enhance their medication compliance and allow assessment of their drinking behavior.
By the end of the study topiramate recipients had 2.9 fewer average drinks per day, 3.1 fewer average drinks per drinking day, 28% fewer days with heavy drinking, 26% more abstinent days, reduced craving, and reduced serum glutamyl transpeptidase levels. Topiramate appears to be one of the few effective medications for treating alcohol dependence.
